During the precinct meetings taking place in late February and early March of this year, several resolutions were considered and passed on a wide range of issues, from the local to the national level. Thanks to the hard work of the Resolutions Committee, led by Hank Elkins, these resolutions were refined and edited into a single document.  When applicable, resolutions on very similar topics were combined.

Please read and review these resolutions for consideration prior to the County Convention on April 10th.  If you print a copy, please bring it with you, along with any notes for suggestions you may have.  Resolutions are available for download in either a Word or PDF format.

Join the YES WE CANS Food Drive to benefit the Inter-Faith Council (IFC) and Orange Congregations in Missions (OCIM) food pantries on Monday, January 18th!

The Orange County Democrats are partnering with Organizing for America/Orange County Campaign for Change on this national day of service to help our neighbors across the county who are struggling. The shelves at the county’s food pantries are constantly being emptied.  Let’s work together to help restock the empty shelves! We are asking each precinct to collect at least 47 lbs of food to help us reach our goal of 2010 lbs of non -perishable food, toilet paper, new or gently used clean blankets and coats.

You can take food and clothing donations donations and/or help collect food in either Chapel Hill/Carrboro or Hillsborough:

Joint Democratic/Republican Statement About Illegal Campaign Mailings

Jim White, Chair of the Orange County Democratic Party and Bill Knight, Chair of the Orange County Republican Party issued the following joint statement today:

Last week a mailing was sent to residents of Chapel Hill that was supposedly from an organization calling itself “CHC PAC.”   There is apparently no such political action committee registered with the Orange County Board of Elections and no contact information or mailing address on the postcard.  The postcard is designed to look like a mailer supporting mayoral candidate Mark Kleinschmidt, and contains attacks on mayoral candidate Matt Czajkowski.

Frankly, this does not read like a mailing that was intended to benefit either candidate, neither candidate has time to respond to it, and we are greatly disturbed that this was sent in Orange County in the few days before an election.    This appears to be an unfortunate and illegal attempt by an unknown individual or group to influence the election for Chapel Hill Mayor.   We do not care whether the responsible parties are Democrats, Republicans, or unaffiliated; this is not the way campaigns are conducted in Orange County, and we strongly condemn the person or persons behind this mailing.  This improper electioneering communication may violate both the North Carolina General Statutes and federal mail fraud statutes and we call on the Orange County District Attorney, the Orange County Board of Elections, and the North Carolina Board of Elections to investigate this matter vigorously and punish those behind this mailing to the full extent of the law.

We both implore the voters of Chapel Hill to ignore this spurious attempt to influence the election and ask that it not influence their choice either way.  Judge the candidates on their positions, not some unwelcome attempt by a third party to sway the outcome.

Chapel Hill Mayoral Candidate Matt Czajkowski criticized the OCDP in the October 31, 2009 News & Observer:

Czajkowski lamented ... an Orange County Democratic Party voter drive when Kleinschmidt is the only Democrat in the nonpartisan mayor's race. "How do you put a value on the resources of the Orange County Democratic Party?" said Czajkowski, an unaffiliated voter. "This is all supposed to be how Chapel Hill leads when it comes to democracy?"

In response, I sent the following letter to the editor:

In today’s News & Observer, Chapel Hill Mayoral Candidate Matt Czajkowski “lamented” what he calls an Orange County Democratic Party voter drive asking “This is supposed to be how Chapel Hill leads when it comes to democracy?”  The answer to his question is yes – this is precisely how Chapel Hill leads in getting people engaged.  I am disappointed that Mr. Czajkowski criticizes the county party for encouraging people to come to the polls in Orange County.  Apparently, Mr. Czajkowski, who is unaffiliated, fears that he will not be able to appeal to Democratic voters.  Because Mark Kleinschmidt is the only registered Democrat in the Chapel Hill mayor’s race, Mr. Czajkowski apparently believes that the Democratic Party should not have held candidate forums, should stop providing information about early voting, links to voter guides and information about candidate endorsements on our website, and that the party should refrain from encouraging county Democrats to come to the polls in this election.
