Jones Street Report: Hagan Hires Campaign Manager, Potential GOP Opponents Emerging, Bills Submitted To Governor for Signature

Sen. Hagan Hires a New Campaign Manager

The 2014 U.S. Senate race is taking shape with Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan hiring Preston Elliott as her campaign manager. Elliott most recently served in the same role to help U.S. Sen. Jon Tester win re-election in Montana, one of the closely watched races of the 2012 campaign cycle. In 2010, Elliott worked as coordinated campaign director for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in his re-election effort, another high profile race. The big hire signals that Hagan expects a big fight in 2014. "He has a proven track record of success, and with his help and the help of North Carolinians of all walks of life, I expect to cross the finish line with a victory in November 2014," Hagan said in a statement.

Potential Hagan Opponents

A new Public Policy Polling survey -- set for release later Tuesday and obtained exclusively by Dome -- shows its a wide open race among Republican primary voters. Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Forest leads the field with 18 percent, according ot the Democratic polling firm. PPP added Forest's name to the potential field for the first time this month and he still managed to outpace Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (13 percent) and Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry (12 percent). The only announced candidate, tea partier Greg Brannon, gets 4 percent and at least a quarter of voters weren't decided on any of the nine names PPP tested. (More from the poll below.)

Carrboro Precinct Democratic Event

07/18/2012 7:00 pm

Carrboro Precinct would love to have all Democrats come for a no-strings-attached gathering next Wednesday evening, July 18, at 7:00 pm.

Frank Penta has most graciously offered his wonderful wood turning studio----next to his and Mary's home on 113 Winsome Lane---and even plans to open some bottles from his wine cellar for the occasion.

We are delighted to announce that our own Sen. Ellie Kinnaird has agreed to join us for this occasion, to say a few words and to be available for answering questions.

It will be a time then:

  • To socialize and in maybe many cases meet each other for the first time,
  • To share our frustration with the horribly regressive actions the Republicans in our state and nation continue to impose.
  • To gain energy from each other and share ideas for how we can contribute to restoring our state and our country to sanity and to compassion while we still can!

We will have yard signs for a small price, bumper stickers if we can get them, and voter registration forms on hand for any of you who might have neighbors or colleagues new to the area.

If you plan to come, please try to let us know by email, or phone at 919-933-0717, so we'll have an idea of numbers. In addition please give us an idea about how many others might also come with you.

A further request:  We'll try to have some snacks and other beverages, but let us know if you can bring some yourself. It would help to consider this as a bit of a drinks and snacks potluck.

If the numbers are very large and the weather "fit" for it, we could meet in the wonderful meadow-like area (complete with chairs!) behind the studio.

There is PLENTY of parking for all!

Hope to hear from you and to SEE YOU!

Thanks!

Mary Hughes Brookhart, Carrboro Precinct Chair

Location/Directions:

Winsome Lane runs north off of Old Fayetteville across from the McDougle schools---0.3 miles from Hillsborough Road and 0.7 miles from Hwy. 54.    113 Winsome is about 0.5 miles from Old Fayetteville and on the left.
